The ASMBS Designates Holzer Weight Loss Solutions as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence

Holzer Weight Loss Solutions announced today that it has been named an American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence® (BSCOE). The ASMBS BSCOE designation recognizes surgical programs with a demonstrated track record of favorable outcomes in weight loss surgery.

For many years, local residents who suffered injuries related to their bones, joints, ligaments, tendons or nerves had to travel long distances to receive quality care from an orthopedic surgeon. That hasn’t been the case for nearly a decade since Holzer Medical Center-Jackson opened its doors.

Holzer Medical Center-Jackson announces the addition of Nurse Practitioner Amy B. Gwinn to its Family Practice staff. She will serve patients at Holzer Family Care, located in the Medical Office Building on the HMC-Jackson campus, and at Jenkins Memorial Health Clinic in Wellston.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Holzer Center for Cancer Care (HCCC) is joining forces with Susan G. Komen for the Cure® to provide free health fairs for women during the month.
Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is the world’s largest grassroots organization of breast cancer survivors and activists dedicated to finding a cure for the disease. The organization was founded in 1982 by Nancy G. Brinker, who made a promise to her dying sister, Susan Komen, that she would work to find a cure for breast cancer.

Holzer Consolidated Health Systems (HCHS) has named Kenneth G. Payne to serve as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for the organization. Mr. Payne assumed his new role Monday, Sept. 14, 2009.

Saunders, President and Chief Executive Officer of HCHS. “He is a proven, dynamic leader whose strategic vision, creative thinking and values-based management skills will add strength to our leadership team and help keep Holzer moving in a positive direction.”

Annual fundraiser brings in $8,000 to support local Hospice patients

Fifteen softball teams from around the region gathered for a good cause the weekend of Sept. 12-13 at Raccoon Creek County Park in Gallia County, as Holzer Hospice hosted its annual Hits for Hospice fundraising tournament.

Jackson County native Peter M. Detty has been named Executive Director of Holzer Assisted Living-Jackson (HAL-J), one of two assisted living facilities operated by Holzer Health Systems’ Long Term Care Division.

Holzer Consolidated Health Systems has named Frederick W. Williams, Ph.D., to be its new Director of Chaplaincy Services.

A grant provided by the Lance Armstrong Foundation© is fueling a new venture at the Holzer Center for Cancer Care (HCCC).

The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center-James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC-James) was chosen to be part of the Lance Armstrong Foundation LIVESTRONG© Survivorship Center of Excellence Network and was awarded a $1.25 million grant to establish a survivorship center, enhance survivorship research and expand education and support services for cancer survivors.

The OSUCCC-James in turn selected two of its community-based partners to be part of that effort: Holzer Center for Cancer Care in Gallipolis and University East Hospital in Columbus.

Holzer Home Care has once again received high marks from the Ohio Department of Health (ODH).

During a recent ODH survey, Holzer Home Care was found to be deficiency-free and in complete compliance with State and Federal regulations. The Ohio Department of Health conducts surveys for all Medicare and Medicaid certified home health agencies in the state. The surveys are unannounced and include an audit of many patient records as well as visits to patients’ homes.
 

Ethel Price is a walking, talking miracle.

About three months ago, however, the future did not look good for Mrs. Price following a multiple vehicle accident on March 29, 2009, in which she suffered severe injuries. She and her husband, Eddie, were on their way home to Gallia County from a trip to Florida when the wreck occurred along Interstate 75 near London, Ky. Mr. Price was also injured, but has since made a full recovery.

End of life issues present difficult challenges for many families.

Since 1994, Holzer Hospice has helped families face those challenges with care and compassion. Hospice offers much needed palliative (comfort) care to residents in Gallia, Jackson and Meigs counties as well as portions of Athens, Lawrence and Vinton counties in southern Ohio.

For nearly 18 years, the Rehabilitation Unit at Holzer Medical Center (HMC) in Gallipolis has been serving the needs of area residents who require various types of therapy to recover from illness or injury.

The Rehabilitation Unit, with a capacity of 29 beds, is located on the fifth floor of HMC-Gallipolis. It opened in June 1991 and has provided rehabilitation services for many patients throughout the years. In 2008, the unit admitted almost 800 patients. The unit is nationally certified by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehab Facilities (CARF).
