Pilates Classes Offered at Holzer Therapy & Wellness Center

Pilates is a form of low-impact exercise that aims to strengthen muscles while improving postural alignment and flexibility. Pilates moves tend to target the core, although the exercises work other areas of your body as well. You can do Pilates with or without equipment (more on that below), but no matter what, expect the moves to involve slow, precise movements and breath control. Pilates was developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates, after whom it was named. Pilates is practiced worldwide, especially in Western countries such as Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom.

Holzer Therapy and Wellness Center offers Pilates classes on Tuesday and Thursday at 5:30pm to 6:15pm. The instructor for the classes is Segun Agaja, Doctor of Physical Therapy, Holzer Health System. Classes are open to anyone who would like to participate; it is not required for individuals to be a member of the Wellness Center in order to utilize classes offered. Pilates class price packages include:

  • First class free
  • $10/class
  • 5 classes for $40
  • 10 classes for $75

Pilates offers plenty of benefits to your body, regardless of an individual’s fitness background. Improvements in posture, body alignment, balance, and core strength are just a few of the advantages of incorporating Pilates into your workout.  A 2016 study found that eight weeks of Pilates classes improved abdominal endurance, flexibility, and balance.

“Pilates is beneficial for individuals of all ages. It increases adaptability and the level of function for each body type,” shared Agaja. “I encourage anyone who would like to improve strength, tone, and core development to come and experience the class.”

Agaja is a certified Pilates instructor, completing two 16 hour courses and a 18 hour system training at a Pilates center in Columbus, Ohio. In addition, he has completed 150 hours of observation of training. He completed his doctorate of physical therapy at Ohio University, Athens, Ohio. Agaja joined Holzer in May 2018 in the Gallipolis Therapy Department.

“I enjoy being a part of Holzer,” shared Agaja. “There is truly a bond with the patients and co-workers in this organization. I have created connections with individuals and look forward to helping improve the health and wellness of our communities.”
