Holzer Nurses Receive Scholarships
Four $1000 scholarships representing The Mary & H.B. Thomas Memorial Nursing Scholarship were recently awarded to members of the Holzer nursing staff to assist them in advancing their education. This year’s recipients were Emma Bartram, Josie Cremeans, Olivia Harrison, and Mattie Petry.
Emma is currently a nurse extern at Holzer, where she has had the opportunity to work on the Critical Care, Respiratory Therapy, Diabetic Education, and the Pediatric units. She is in her final semester of her associate degree at the University of Rio Grande. Upon graduation, Emma plans to continue to work at Holzer as an RN while returning to school to complete her bachelor’s. Her goal is to become an advanced practice nurse.
Josie has worked per diem on the 4th floor of the hospital since August of 2021 during her college enrollment. She decided to become a nurse because she is passionate about her patients and wants to make them smile. Josie will graduate in May with her RN degree from the University of Rio Grande. She plans to continue her education to obtain her bachelor's degree in Nursing.
Olivia is currently a nurse extern at Holzer, where she has had the opportunity to work on the Pediatrics floor and in the Emergency Room. She is enrolled at Marshall University and will graduate with her BSN, RN in May 2024. After obtaining her degree, Olivia plans to work as a RN on the Holzer Pediatrics unit.
Mattie is currently a full-time nursing assistant on the Holzer Inpatient Psychiatric Unit and is in her final semester at the University of Rio Grande. After obtaining her degree, Mattie would like to gain experience in different areas of the hospital, particularly the Obstetrics Unit. She has a goal to specialize in infants born with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome. Mattie is also interested in becoming certified in American Sign Language to help better serve our patients. She plans to gain her BSN while continuing to work as a nurse for Holzer.
The Thomas Scholarship was established in 1974 in memory of Mary Scully Thomas, RN, by her husband, Homer B. Thomas, MD. At the time of his death in 1988, Dr. Thomas’ name was added. Their sons, Dr. James Thomas of Oxford, Ohio, and Dr. John Thomas of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, continue to support this important scholarship fund.
Interest from the corpus of these funds makes each scholarship possible. Scholarships can be set up by an individual, family, or civic group. For more information, call Abby Wiseman Greer at (740) 446-5878 or e-mail awiseman@holzer.org.
