Dr. Louis Gerena is a non-surgical orthopaedic and sports medicine physician. He specializes in diagnosing and managing musculoskeletal and sports injuries including fractures, sprains, arthritis, tendon injuries, and exercise-related illnesses. Dr. Gerena treats these issues with medications, injections, physical therapy, bracing, and other options. He is trained in performing ultrasound-guided injections including cortisone, prolotherapy, and other services.
Dr. Gerena received his medical degree from Florida State University College of Medicine. He completed his family medicine training at the Trident/MUSC Family Medicine Residency Program in Charleston, South Carolina. He went on to receive his certification in Primary Care Sports Medicine at Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center in Birmingham, Alabama, founded by the world-renown surgeon Dr. James Andrews.
During his fellowship, he was the team physician for Briarwood Christian High School, the University of West Alabama, and Birmingham-Southern College. He then moved back to Charleston, SC, where he worked at the Medical University of South Carolina and was the team physician for multiple professional and college teams including the South Carolina Stingrays (hockey), Charleston Riverdogs (baseball), Charleston Battery (soccer), and the College of Charleston.
Currently, he is the team doctor for South Gallia High School. He lives in the Waterloo area with his fiancé and 3-year-old whippet, and enjoys traveling, history, and movies.
