Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteering at Holzer is an enjoyable and rewarding experience. One of the best things about volunteering is the satisfaction you gain from doing something for others. We work with our volunteers to match their interests and talents with the needs that exist throughout the hospital and other facilities.
Who Can Volunteer?
Our volunteers range in age from 16-17 years in our junior volunteer program, to adults 18+ years.
Many volunteers are retirees, active individuals who are not content to sit at home. They bring many years of experience to the hospital each day, along with their generous hearts. They are also valuable because of the long-term commitment they make to the hospital. Many of our seniors have been active volunteers for 10, 15, 20 years, or more.
For others, volunteering provides a stepping stone to re-enter the job market. Volunteer positions offer learning opportunities for people of all ages and interests. Volunteering says good things about you when you apply for a paid position; it sets you apart from the crowd and provides positive insight about your character. The skills you gain as a volunteer will give you confidence and boost your resume with new abilities and experiences.

Hospice
The scope and nature of volunteer services at Holzer Hospice are almost as great as the number of volunteers. Each volunteer brings to hospice a unique style, as well as a set of skills and experiences which greatly enhance the functioning and scope of the services we can provide. By assisting in the reduction of costs, volunteers help assure that our resources will always be there for those in need.
Volunteer services are provided under the direction of a volunteer coordinator whose skills, qualifications, and experience are commensurate with the supervision and training needs of volunteers under their supervision. A volunteer coordinator works closely with other members of the hospice interdisciplinary team to assign and monitor volunteer activities.
Opportunities to Volunteer at Holzer Hospice include:
- Direct contact with patient and family
- Administrative support (which includes office duties)
- Community Education
- Pet Therapy

Senior Outreach
A free service, Holzer Senior Outreach reaches out to isolated seniors, providing a telephone reassurance program, home assistance, and a health education loan library. Telephone calls are made to seniors on a daily basis, reminding them to take their medication, to make sure they are safe, and for socialization. This routine contact often provides family members and caregivers with a sense of ease when the senior is alone in their home.
Holzer Senior Outreach serves Gallia, Jackson, Meigs, Vinton, Lawrence, Athens, Scioto and Ross Counties in Ohio and Mason County in West Virginia. Residents of other counties may also be considered.
If you know of a senior who would benefit from this service, or you would like to volunteer with Holzer Senior Outreach, please call (740) 441-3921 or email vnotting@holzer.org.
